Mahkayla McKenzie

Major: Civil Engineering – Structural Track

Mahkayla McKenzie is a third-year civil engineering student pursuing the civil engineering structural track and a minor in English.  She is a member of DEID, Duke Engineers for International Development.  Ms. McKensie is also a member of the Women's Club Soccer team at Duke and Cru, Campus Crusade for Christ.  She plans to travel to Uganda this summer with DEID and DukeEngage to build a women's dormitory and a ram pump to provide safe housing and access to clean water for female students.  She became interested in the Boeing Grand Challenge K12 Outreach Scholars Program because of her desire to teach young students about engineering.  In addition, she has taken courses in childhood education and was a tutor to younger students during high school.  Ms. McKenzie views this program as an opportunity to incorporate her love for engineering in K12 educational settings and to encourage other students to pursue STEM studies and careers.
