Majors: Mechanical Engineering and German

Ben Spilsbury is a junior majoring in Mechanical Engineering and German.   He recently took a semester to study abroad in Berlin and is excited at the prospect of working abroad while combining his mechanical engineering background with his newly developed language skills in German.  Ideally, he would like to get involved with the German automotive industry as a mechanical engineer.  In the meantime, Ben stays busy at Duke with schoolwork and pursuing extra-curricular interests.

Ben is passionate about being part of the Boeing Fellows Grand Challenges K-12 Outreach Program.  During his own K12 years, he volunteered as a middle school tutor and a camp counselor at a summer camp near his hometown of Pittsburgh and he looks forward to continuing this type of service as a Grand Challenges Fellow.  What makes him particularly excited about this program is that it gives him the chance to integrate his academic pursuits with his interest in volunteering, working with and helping kids.  Ben is looking forward to designing activities that will reveal to children what the Grand Challenges are, why they are important, and to encourage them to pursue STEM studies and careers.
